QUOTE(racerxgto @ Jan 29 2009, 04:07 AM) I'm quite positive if you can pull their MAC address, you will find that they are different. Its one of those RARE moments in networking, but it is possible to have the same IP address assignment to a personal computer, but still be on a totally DIFFERENT network at the provider level. Confusing? Ok, everybody has an internet provider to get on the net. Their provider has a network that breaks down IP addresses for their customers. Those IP's must be a unique number WITHIN the service providers network. When customers go OUTSIDE their network provider onto what is called the DMZ, another set of IP addresses within the DMZ take over and route all the connections that need to be made to sites like, RateMyMelons. Those IP numbers have no reflection on individual PC's/iMac. Whole different ball game. It is quite possible, that both RateMyMelons users were assigned the same IP number on their service provider. Still confused? It would be like having the same house address number, but everybody has their own unique zip code that differentiates location. Clear as mud? not quite clear as Crystal Pepsi, but it makes sense to me

If either or both of them are on dial-up, their IP addresses could change every time they log on based on a set of IP numbers that are already assigned to their provider. I know. I use to watch the numbers when I had dial-up.
