Bondi,

I need you to confirm or deny something I heard about Oz (Aus.)

Now, I was in a conversation with a friend who had just hit a North American White Tailed deer. His car had considerable damage. I had to agree with him that the White Tailed Deer is one of the dumbest animals on the face of the earth (excepting of course Dubya...i.e. G W Bush). And then another friend told me about 'Roo Bars. Do you folks really build cages on the front of your vehicles to protect yourself from Kangaroos? Is this true or is this just some Crockadile Dundee fantasy that someone cooked up. Are kangaroos really that numerous that you can't drive in the country without hitting one?

In New York state, more white tailed dear are killed by vehicle collisions than by hunters. With a V. P. like Cheney, does it surpprise you? grinning-smiley-003.gif

I don't know if I'd call deer the dumbest animals on the planet. The reason they get hit is beacuse when they feel like they are being threatened they freeze, as they would in the forest so that a predator will be less likely to see their movement, except on a highway they're pretty much screwed using that defense haha. Lots of deer get hit on roads here too but it's because there are too many with few predators left to curb their numbers. But lots of people hunt them so it does help control them to some degree. And they taste good too...mmmm....bambi lol. Lots of people that drive trucks here have big grill guards that protect the vehicle if you happen to smash a deer on the highway.

But I'll let bondi answer the question since i didn't really address YOUR question at all haha.

bondi, is the band the tea party big in austrailia. they are a canadian band that recently broke up and they were saying on the radio how big they were in australia, but i figured they were full of shit. what's the scoop?

Posted by: luv2cubounce Feb 15 2006, 09:32 PM

yes we do have whats called roo bars on the front of cars trucks, not all mostly people who live in the bush(country) it is not a cage but sort of like a three bar gate the width of the car and attached to the chassis as it loopes under the front of the vehicle......just like in the movie mad max...........

To Answer your question.... Yes and No.

Yes we have a type of bullbar on some vehicles that they call roo bar's to protect the car in case of hitting a roo due to the considerable damage a roo would cause. These are only found in the bush (i.e rural areas) and not in the city. Roo numbers arent that big over here... they dont hop down the main streets of Sydney or any other city for that matter. You will only see them in rural areas.

I know of the Tea Party because I am a tragic music lover and I actually saw them one year the "The Big Day Out" which is an outdoor festival like Lullapalooza (not sure on spelling). To call them BIG over here would be in one word... lying!

The chemical romance are starting to make it here in Aus though grinning-smiley-003.gif

laughing-smiley-014.gif laughing-smiley-014.gif laughing-smiley-014.gif Ok! yeah right. NZ is just right next door...about 2 or 3 thousand miles away. nah.gif

I know that I couldn't possibly keep up with any Aussie in the beer drinking department. I and another fellow were sitting on the beach in Waikiki once enjoying conversation with a fine looking sun bathing babe. Between the two of us, we drank three of those oil cans of Fosters a piece in a little more than a hour...admittedly not much for an Aussie, but I was so shit faced that i could barely get back to base on the other side of Oahu. The hot sun, Fosters, and a beautiful lady...not an unpleasant memory, just one that I have to laugh at myself for every now and again. I occasionally drink Fosters, but never out of cans & never that much at once. 2thumbs.gif

Not heard that before but a fag can be a cigarette or a homosexual man. Also faggots were these weird big meatball type things that were made up of the left over bits of meat that werent good enough for hot dogs, all mushed together and served in gravy.

that picture is hilarious, but I shudder at the thought of what kind of meat would be deemed "not good enough" for hot dogs. blink.gif

Not even sure if they still make faggots anymore, probably got shut down when people figured out about healthy eating and stuff. Remember having them as a kid and really liking them, looking back on it thats probably very wrong.

Every beach in Australia and particularly Sydney has scores of topless women on any given day... check out Bondi Beach dude!

On top of that. We are hardly going to put naked women on International Advertisements are we? coco.gif

The view was great but the guy was coz.gif  taling  coz.gif of topless beaches blink.gif  coco.gif

I was astonished to find out how conservative the US was on beach nudity. I mean girls dont stroll around butt naked here unless on a Nudist Beach but topless sunbathing and swimming is very acceptable.
*

coz.gif Talking? coz.gif Sorry, Bondi, I'm not trying to make fun of a mistake. I'm just trying to understand the sentence. I like tailing topless beaches, too. I just haven't found any to tail. laughing-smiley-017.gif

confused-smiley-013.gif I have heard that there are some topless beaches in Florida and Califorinia. They're not really legal, but more either overlooked or hard to enforce due to there location. confused-smiley-013.gif

You're right. The US is very conservative regarding toplessness on the beach or elsewhere. They finally had to pass laws just to allow mothers to nurse in public. I would love to totally blame the Christian right about this issue but I can't because there are members of the liberal left who would problably in their own perverse way find some issue about nudity being somehow anti-woman....Don't ask for logic because there isn't any. confused-smiley-013.gif

You have a great day, mate.

Nice to see at least three different colonies of ours attempting to further mutilate their mother tongue!! laughing-smiley-014.gif

Cigarettes are known as fags, and the butts are called fag ENDS!

Faggots are traditionally made of liver & onions mixed with suet and breadcrumbs and I believe the name originates from Welsh for 'mixture'

I assume that meld is referring to sweet cigarettes - over here they have lost that so realistic red tip (well I thought so when I was a kid....breathing out on a cold day and pretending that you were really smoking - ha!), and are now enticing known as 'candy sticks'....I suppose 'cancer sticks' wouldn't sell so well....?

Septic tanks... rolleyes.gif , variation on cockney rhyming slang, and not 'specially Oz...

We have a far superior version of vegemite - the original, known as Marmite! smilio04.gif

"With its unusual and unique flavor, Vegemite was not an immediate success and sales were slow. In 1928 Vegemite was renamed and registered as Parwill in an attempt to boost its sales and to attract customers of the rival spread Marmite (an English yeast spread that dominated the Australian market since 1910). "If Marmite...then Parwill" was the rationale behind Walker's strategy to carve a niche in the market for his spread. The name Parwill and Walker's play on words didn't catch on. It was only sold as Parwill for a short time in Queensland. The name was withdrawn in 1935, and the original name was reinstated."

Well SnS you should know that most of our sayings are derived from the motherland as that's is where most Aussies used to come from.

Marmite is also a terrible product but it's more about what you grew up with.

Rhyming slang is a wonderful thing is it not???

Anyway, I was trying to ease the Yanks in but if you want some real Aussie sayings here goes...

Fair Dinkum
Bogan
Tinnie
Dero
Dole Bludger
Dunny
Durry
Grouse
Map of Tassie

Old fella
Sheila
Bloke

This week's word isn't really Aussie but it's a phrase that has come in to vogue here in Sydney and as far as I am aware you guy's dont know it.

"Muffin Top"

When a larger woman wears low cut jeans or other pants that are too tight and her fat rolls hang over the side of the jeans/pants. Just like a muffin top hangs over the muffin stub. Can you picture it?

i.e "look at that chick's muffin top"

I've never heard that term for it. That's a serious wardrobe malfunction...but it is not just a female problem... The male parallel problem is plumbers butt. The guys beer belly holds his waist line so low that his ass crack shows. There is a catalogue company ( http://www.duluthtrading.com/ ) in the US that sells work clothing including extra long tailed T-shirts to cover the exposed ass crack.

Now I know this is not a uniquely Australian word but we Aussies use it in a very unique way. Basically "mate" means friend, companion etc but basically everyone in Australia is a "mate" whether they be your best friend or some guy you just abused in a bout of raod rage.

e.g 1: Hello mate, how are you today?
e.g 2: Where the fuck did you get your licence from mate? You're a fucking retard!

Even Aussies call them Hoodies and we have a different name for everything!

haha, you've only missed 25 weeks.
anyway, we hardly ever use the word "mate" in Canada in that sense althugh I here British people use it all the time to. We don't really have one term to encompass all those situations like you do with mate. We use various terms like dude, man, brother, guy, douchebag.
*

Yes mate we do. Its also quite common too call everyone boss especially if they ask you something then you answer with yes boss, or yes chief. If anyone has any polish phrases would be handy, theres lots of polish people live near me now and im sure they are talking about me, plotting or summin either that or they are stunned by awesomeness smile.gif

What kind do you reccommend.

After our discussion about differences between New Zealand and Australia(there is a wiki page devoted to this in fact), I was watching the NZ all blacks thrashing of Canada and was listening to the NZ announcers and I can indeed notice a difference in accents. When they say 10 it sounds like teen. Their accent sounds kinda like how the Simpsons tried doing the Aussie accents, at lease in my opinion.

Oh god the Simpsons take on our accent is the worst. As a rule most American's that try and do our accent end up sounding like Kiwi's. It is frustrating when I watch LOST. You have the actual Aussie Clare and then when they do flashbacks they sound nothing like Clare.

Oh and I saw bits and pieces of that game. The All Blacks are a dominating team! Have you guys qualified for the world cup?

They sure are!
I don't follow rugby too closely but watch it now and again. Canada's rugby program is getting pretty good in recent years. We're still not near the top of the heap in the international world but it's not like our soccer team vs the rest of the world. In rugby we can actually compete.
And Canada did qualify for the world cup in a thrashing of the US team.

Ok peeps I am reviving this thread but I am going to expand it's horizons at the same time.

Inspired by Comedyman's "ask em a question" thread, this thread is now also open to any questions you have about Australia.

Australia has to be one of the most misrepresented and misunderstood countries among all the developed nations across the world. Unfortunately it is largely Americans because the British know alot about us as do Asia. The 3rd largest tourist group to visit Sydney is people from the USA. I live in a pretty tourist-popular area and I hear all sorts of crazy things people expect to see or do when the hit our shores.

So the open line is free... shout out your questions!

I will refrain from asking the obvious toilet-flushing question and just say:

I am actually pretty ignorant and don't really have any presumptions about australia other than I'd really like to go there sometime. If my wife and I were to go there, would you be our tour guide and show us around all the non touristy places that are usually much more worth seeing than the tourist attractions.

Anheuser-Busch brews Bud, Michelob, Busch and about 50 other lesser known beers. How Conde Nest could overlook Portland is unconscionable. Actually, I'd love to visit Sidney, it's pretty near the top of my "things-to-do" list.

be a monorail conductor, run out on a baseball field during a game, manage a beautiful country singer, eat the world's biggest hoagie, be a blackjack dealer, appear on the gong show, own the Dallas Cowboys, live in the woods, keeping a journal of my thoughts and bowling a perfect game.
I'll have to add Sydney to the list.

What the fuck?

Posted by: paybarraman Oct 18 2007, 02:43 AM

Can't say I know alot about Costco. The stores are mainly in the south/central part of the US. WHat I DO know is the CEO uses a pretty interesting business model. He actually believes his employees should be paid what they're worth, that they should be valued and rewarded for success. The company has one of, if not the lowest, employee turn-over rates in the US. Most of his middle and upper management people started out working in the stores themselves. He actually is a regular site on the floor of the store near the corporate offices and actually knows many of the floor staff by name. And for me here's the kicker, this guy, as the CEO of a multi-million a year annual profits company only takes a $65-$75,000 USD a year salary. He has no corporate jet or any of that shit.

Google up the comapny Bondi and you may find more than that. I just put down what I knew off the top of my head from one of the "NBC Dateline" type primetime news programs.

Sounds pretty interesting. I am not sure of the time line but I am pretty sure they will be opening stores in Australia with Sydney and Melbourne likely to be among the first I presume.

I'll google em.. my main thought was do they sell liquor?

Posted by: paybarraman Oct 18 2007, 02:53 AM

It's possible. Most times the determining factor in liquor sales are state level restrictions, not necessarily the store. For instance, in my home state, the only place to buy liquor is in a "State Store"/Wine & Spirits Shop. Standard department and grocery stores do not sell alcohol.

Yeah I know about different levels of de-regulation etc. I just checked their website out, they do sell wine only which means they might appeal of a liquor license when they set up here.

Fuck they sell some shit, all in one outlet??? What's the catch re the low prices?

Posted by: paybarraman Oct 18 2007, 03:07 AM

No real catch per se....Just the combination of bulk sales and repeat business. Plus, here in the US there is the consumer that looks for the All-In-One stop shop. Also, and I'm not real sure here, but you need to understand you're not getting the high profile name brand items.

Stores like Costco and WalMart are marketing for the low to middle-low income homes.

I think I said this somewhere but when I was in Dallas airport earlier this year between connecting flights I was in need of some junk food to help with a hangover so I got some Maccas (Slang for McDonalds).

I didn't think I could stomach much so I asked for a small meal and the lady came out with the most chips (fries) I have ever seen and like this massive coke. When I said I asked for a small, she said that WAS small!!! Equivalent to our largest size

Costco is a pretty good place. We have one here. It is like a Wal-Mart but different. Where Wal-Mart is just about the lowest prices, Costco is more about, really good quality and lower prices. You have to buy a membership to shop there. It is about $50 a year(not sure as I get one through work). They sell mostly in bulk. You can't just go in and buy a can of soup, you have to buty 3 or a big ass one. It's good for families. Also they sell electronics, furniture, fitness equip, toys, books, magazines, electronics, jewellry, tires and on and on. They don't really sell cheap stuff(low quality). Most products are name brand or their house brand, Kirkland. MOST stuff is cheaper than in other stores but you still have to be careful as some stuff is the same price or higher than you can find elsewhere.
They have REALLY good meat, and high quality produce and grocery items.
They have a decent selection of electronics as well. It's not the very top of the line, but you're not going to find Sorny or knock off brands, it's all Panasonic, Sony, Apple, etc.
The only real problem is that you go in for a few things and you come out with a $200 bill, no exaggerating! I still don't know what I'm gonna do with 12 pounds of nutmeg wink.gif

*

it's true, they treat their employees really well. Here they aren't even open on civic holidays and you go in and see the same employees month after month. They pay pretty well.

QUOTE(bondiguy @ Oct 18 2007, 12:49 AM)
Sounds pretty interesting. I am not sure of the time line but I am pretty sure they will be opening stores in Australia with Sydney and Melbourne likely to be among the first I presume.

I'll google em.. my main thought was do they sell liquor?
*

You can't sell liquour in department stores here, but maybe in Aus. confused-smiley-013.gif

QUOTE(paybarraman @ Oct 18 2007, 01:07 AM)
No real catch per se....Just the combination of bulk sales and repeat business.  Plus, here in the US there is the consumer that looks for the All-In-One stop shop.  Also, and I'm not real sure here, but you need to understand you're not getting the high profile name brand items.

Stores like Costco and WalMart are marketing for the low to middle-low income homes.
*

They sell lots of name brands at ours.

QUOTE(bondiguy @ Oct 18 2007, 05:22 AM)
The TV's on their website were Sony Bravia, Samsung etc which are decent brands?

You have to understand how completely foreign it is to me to go to a place, buy some butter, a television and get my tires changed all in the one store! blink.gif

Do you guys even have Wal-mart?

QUOTE(bondiguy @ Oct 18 2007, 06:04 AM)
They have McDonals inside too??? ohmy.gif

*

Most Wal-marts have McD's inside Costco has it's own restaurant.
We're in the middle as far as sizes, our largest size is America's medium.
I think that's the problem with the US obesity problem. Not to say in Canada we don't have a problem. There are some FAT fuckers here too, but our rates aren't quite as high. I don't think we as a whole are eating any better. People around the world like to eat crap haha. The problem is that the establishments keep upping the portion sizes to ridiculous levels. After awhile, a giant size fries and drink start to look normal if that's all anyone serves. And how do you reverse the trend. Serve less? Then you look like you're ripping off the customer.
Well I don't know what that has to do with Costco or Australia for that matter, but umm, it's the most coherent thing I've typed all day.

costco , sounds like wal marts SAMS CLUB ... gotta be a member and buy in bulk ..

Posted by: Macdonald Oct 19 2007, 12:31 PM

My mom used to have a membership there and I know the comedian Bill Engvall when I went to see him in the summer, said they should rename CostCo to the "Can't leave without spending $300 store" which I find true as I haven't been in there lately but when my mom used to have a memebrship she wouldn't come out of therewithout spending at least $250.

Plus when I think of CostCo all that comes to mind is the move Employee of the Month, as that's basically the store it was filmed in. I wasn't a huge huge fan of the movie, but hey good for a couple chuckles, and i guess gives the idea of what CostCo could be like lol tongue.gif

with me being in a suburb of Toronto within i'd say 30 mins of my house there are:
2 Costcos
1 Sams
1 Super Walmart
3 Regular Walmarts

lol, i've personally never been in a Sam's except in the states, mainly cuz I love buying 28 packs of beer (Molson) for only $15.00 US plus deposit and tax so works out to only $17 something compared to like $40 Canadian for the same thing

it's a travesty how booze made here costs LESS in another country.

I always pick up 40s of Crown Royal whenever I cross the border. Price in the states, $20. Price here, close to $40. blink.gif

yeah it is a travesty...i buy lots of booze in the states when I can,

Especially when you can get 28 packs of bottles or 30 cans for $15 US
1 litre or bigger bottles of wine for like $7 to $10 blink.gif
Hard Liquor like you said $20

Even with our dollar more than the US i'd love to know when Canadian consumer goods will finally reduce in price lol tongue.gif

QUOTE(Gnappster @ Oct 20 2007, 03:18 AM)
*

WOw that response was riddled with references haha but I think I get the idea. Interesting you have to buy membership to shop there... I guess that's how they make their money in some way?

Not sure I'll benefit from it with only the 2 of us at my residence but I'd like to check it out when they do eventually open

You can't sell Liquor IN department stores here either, but most chains have their own liquor stores right next to the maind epartment store. They just get around the law by putting a wall up! haha

In a way it is good the industry is regulated here, keeps me in a job

No we don't have Walmart's here. Coincidentally the only time I have been into a walmart was in Mexico City.

You have to say there is a problem when you cant even go to a department store without a McDonalds shoved in your face and down your throat.

Oh and the answer to the obesity epidemic... walk or run you fat lazy fucks! haha. Australia is not far behind you guys because of the plethora of fast food joints here as well as parents lack of concernt their child is playing 7 hours of PS3 a day and not riding his bike!

Get me typing more than a few lines and the references insert themselves.
I dunno what the logic is behind a paid membership. it's not like they mkae a bulk of their money off it. maybe they feel it instills loyalty in a customer. you pay money so are more likely to shop there? idunno. all in all I think it's worth it, even though I don't pay for my membership.
we spend so much there they wanted to upgrade us to an executive member wacko.gif

Yeah I know what you mean... scarily it's second nature now to reference haha. Yeah I'd be interested to see if it works. Aussies have a far different way of purchasing than North American but the whole premise seems a winner. I bet the other supermarket chains are a little nervous

i guess it's hard to say whether it will do well or not. I know that wal-mart didn't do that well in japan as many there see the lowest prices as low quality.

I also predicted Google was the next best thing-but did nothing about it. Win some-lose some. I didn't know shit about computers, (still don't really) but Google had "Big Hit" written all over it. Any company that will hire only geniuses (or as near to that as possible) is a company that has a really good chance of succeeding. I think I read somewhere that Google only hires about one out of five thousand applicants. And then pays those employees with stock options. If you ever see a company with a similar profile, my advice is to buy as much stock as you can possibly afford. The people who get hired, as well as the employees already there, have a pretty good idea where the price of the stock is going. I wish I listened to my gut instead of my brain, although looking back it's as close to a no-brainer as they come.
